110 Gandhi Road

An album by Arko Mukhaerjee

110 Gandhi Road Darjeeling, my new production e is a multi-lingual original/folk and traditional standards based album, homemade in my quaint little Himalayan mountain abode in Darjeeling. I conceived this little production, a day at a time, throughout the time period of the COVID 19 Lockdown, a time that has taken away lots from each one of us and has also given the love of many loving souls I didn’t know existed.

The album is named after a little settlement in Darjeeling around the Union Church area; a family I have become a part of slowly over a decade, an eclectic simple cameo of life that inspired me to live with integrity and honesty with music, cooking, farming, cross-cultural exchanges, refugeehood and faith.

Music is a quintessential element in my life, undoubtedly a privileged one. However, I do not consider music to be more important than life. It is a thread that invisibly ties each one of us inhabitants of the world into a sacred thread of harmony and co-existence, beyond identity politics and imposed systematic divides within society. What we all have are our own stories of loss, rebuilding and marginalisation based on subtle class divides, all that we can negate with melodies, harmonies and rhythms, we use as tools against abstractions that divide us.

The true genius of the 21st century is life itself. Like Mozart says “Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius.”
